満開・Full Bloom

And another year’s sea of clouds has blown past our great city…
Late though they may have been, the flowers did indeed finally burst forth.
Their beauty is a blessing for a time of new beginnings, as all in Tokyo now settle into the new fiscal, academic, and cultural year.
Though the term Sakura / Cherry Blossom might imply a single tree, we of course know that Cherry Trees in Japan are greatly varied. Nevertheless, the Sakura which are so representative of the change of seasons and years, the Sakura which draw us all out to picnic, those of course come from one singular variety: the Somei Yoshino Sakura. The Somei Yoshino Trees are a great clone army spanning the length of this country– this clone status provides the explanation for how so many trees may so consistently bloom all at once every year across the country. And so Tokyo was enshrouded all at once in early April by the Somei Yoshino’s delicate white flowers.

いよいよ、もう1年の雲海はこの偉大な都市から吹き飛んだ…
開花が遅刻してしまったのが確かだけど、最後に浮き咲いたのは否定できない。
都民みんなそれぞれが新年度の新しい習慣や癖になれるところにいる間、桜の美しさはこの新規冒頭を照らしてくれるのだ。
「さくら」という言葉はやっぱり「一つの木の種類」という意味をする印象を与える傾向があるんじゃないかとは思われるが、定めて桜の木の種類がいっぱい存在していることがよく知られているのだ。しかも、季節の進行を代表したり花見をしに呼んでくれたりする桜の木は、言うまでもない唯一のソメイヨシノなのだ。全国の町の一部になるソメイヨシノはクローン植物の軍隊のようだ。…ちなみにいうと、クローンであるからこそ、毎年全国の町々のソメイヨシノは全部同時に咲いてしまうことがあるのだ。その結果、4月上旬の東京はこのソメイヨシノの精巧な白花に包まれていた。
